YABA by Chef Shaheen
Fans of chef Shaheen, whose social media following reaches into the millions, have ensured his first restaurant in Wasl Vita mall has been a resounding success right from the start. First thrust into the limelight due to his turn on MasterChef UK, the young restauranteur has returned to his Baghdad roots by showcasing his take on Iraqi cuisine in this Dubai venture.
Though flavours and ingredients might be familiar to those accustomed to eating Iraqi favourites, YABA's presentation and interpretation of dishes veer far from tried-and-tested formulas. Expect the unexpected as fun plating and new techniques ensure you'll be surprised as you sample chicken liver skewers with pomegranate sauce, green broad bean salad and his version of chicken masgouf.
Feast on Chef Shaheen's Iraqi menu at YABA
Given his Instagram know-how, you'd expect the chef's concoctions to be photogenic, yet he doesn't compromise on taste either. A generous portion of Iraqi lamb shank quzi is one of the eatery's signature dishes, while the feta-topped black salad with eggplant packs a punch in every sense. If there's one thing you must not miss, however, it is the smoked kubba with barbecue beef encased in crispy rice.
The menu might be short but that shows that the kitchen is confident in its offering. Although you might not find traditional Iraqi cuisine here, you'll find heartfelt plates with plenty of finesse at this Jumeirah eatery.
