When it comes to Dubai culture, few are as astute as founder of Cinema Akil, Butheina Kazim. Here she shares her weekend itinerary of culture for a whistlestop introduction to Dubai’s burgeoning arts scene. Start your journey with an educational visit to Etihad Museum for a fascinating glimpse into the UAE’s history. From there, the Dubai Frame offers a unique simultaneous view into the city’s past and future. If you’re looking for bargains, then try your hand at haggling at the city’s historic Gold Souk and Naif Souk, where you can pick up authentic souvenirs, gifts, leather goods and traditional garments for less.
If you’re feeling creative on day two, a visit to Jameel Arts Centre is a must. The independent art institution is known as a thriving creative community, with captivating and poignant artworks regularly exhibited. From here, head to Dubai art hub and home of Cinema Akil, Alserkal Avenue. Once an industrial area, it now comprises around 40 warehouses, converted into galleries, dance studios, artisanal cafes and more. End the weekend by leaving the city in your rear-view mirror with a short drive to Al Qudra Lakes, a desert oasis in the vast Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve. This is one part of Dubai where wildlife is likely to be seen in its natural habitat, from desert foxes to the oryx, or one of 170 bird species living around the lakes. You can also enjoy a picnic here, or take a leisurely ride around Al Qudra Cycling Track.
