Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU)
Gain a greater appreciation of Dubai’s culture and customs at the Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU). Since opening in 1998, the SMCCU has been helping visitors get a better understanding of the culture and customs of the UAE.
The centre invites guests to take part in a range of activities that help uncover local life, including learning basic Arabic through classes, heritage tours of noteworthy sites and guided mosque visits for an introduction to Islamic practices.
What to expect at SMCCU
Seeing the location itself is worth the trip – it’s a beautifully restored wind tower house in the quaint Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Relish the authentic Emirati breakfast, lunch, or dinner while here – a popular option for many.
Take a seat on Bedouin-style carpets and pillows, while you enjoy a selection of dishes and your local host answers questions about life in the emirate. With its motto ‘Open Doors, Open Minds’ – all questions are welcome and answered, no matter how sensitive they are. Be sure to book early to guarantee a spot.
